Dargaville
In 1872 this frontier settlement, founded by Joseph McMullen Dargaville, became a thriving community established on the prosperity and prospects of Kauri Timber, Kauri gum and rich, loamy soils set in rolling country with a temperature climate. Over the past century a nationally-innovation Dairying and locally driven Kumara industry have brought prosperity to a rural hinterland. In the last two decades Dargaville has matured as a tourist destination as a virtually untouched and unspoiled recreational paradise.
Maungaturoto
Maungaturoto was first settled by pioneers from the Albertland Settlement Scheme back in 1863 and the name means Valley Between two Hills. It is a pretty town 8 km from the Brynderwyn Junction on State Highway12. The rural views from here are magnificent, the township is visible in the distance as one passes through verdant green farmlands on which graze herds of diary cows. The region’s largest Dairy Company is set off to the right on the outskirts of the town. This is rural New Zealand at its most attractive and tranquil.
